A report by the Secretary-General on the UN Office for West Africa is now out on the racks. In it, he says that most West African countries are currently in a period of transition, from conflict to peace consolidation, and remain fragile and vulnerable to outbreaks of renewed violence. In that regard, he says the UNs ability to meet expectations in terms of assistance and coordination will be key if its to preserve its effectiveness and influence in the subregion.
The Secretary-General adds that Said Djinnit, his Special Representative for West Africa and Chairman of the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission, will continue to promote the smooth and peaceful implementation of the relevant ruling and agreement -- so that the settlement of the border dispute between Cameroon and Nigeria can serve as a model for West Africa.
